William Smith started A Stitch Above in his garage in Rescue in 1993 after having canvas work done on his sailboat.

He thought it looked like the kind of job he would like to do so for the next 2 years he went to school in Florida to learn how to do boat canvas work.

The business expanded and grew to offer more than just boat canvas services. So after 5 years working out of his garage he moved the business to the Rescue Yacht basin in 1998. In 2000 the business was moved to its present location on Church Street behind the NAPA. Then in 2006 the business was turned over to his wife Crystal Bashline Smith and it has been going ever since.
